I am out.
When one is pretending, the entire body is revolting. (Anaïs Nin)
There is a quiet courage in walking away.
Not the dramatic kind where you storm out of a room, nor the angry kind where you sever ties with words like knives. No, I am talking about the silent, steady courage it takes to whisper to yourself, "I am out," and mean it.
We are taught to be kind, to keep the peace, to avoid causing discomfort for others. We nod when we want to shake our heads, we smile when our hearts whisper, "no." We stay far too long in places where our souls are starving, our spirits dampened, because we fear that walking away is a form of betrayal. Betrayal of who? Of what?
But the truth is, nothing is more of a betrayal than staying where you no longer belong. Nothing is more self-destructive than bending yourself into shapes just to fit spaces that do not fit you. Life is too sacred to be lived out of obligation. The air too precious to be breathed in a space where you must hold your breath.
We make excuses, we tell ourselves that we are just being understanding, giving it one more chance, one more dance, trying to see it from their perspective. But each time we silence our own voice, each time we stay in rooms where our spirits shrink, we are teaching ourselves that our truth does not matter.
To say, "I am out," is not to be cruel, selfish, or unkind. It is to honour your own aliveness. It is to acknowledge that your time is a finite, sacred resource and that spending it in places that dim your light is the greatest waste of all.
Maybe it is a friendship that has become a one-way street. Maybe it is a commitment you made to please someone else, or a space where you feel small, unseen, unheard. Whatever it is, the moment you realize it drains more from you than it gives, you owe it to yourself to leave.
Because when you choose yourself, you are choosing a life that is real, a life where your spirit can breathe, dance, and shine. And that, above all else, is what you deserve.
“There is a life-force within your soul, seek that life. There is a gem in the mountain of your body, seek that mine. O traveler, if you are in search of that, don't look outside, look inside yourself and seek that.”
Let this be your reminder: You are not here to please. You are not here to endure.
You are here to live. To do what you love.
And sometimes, living means saying, "I have fallen out of love with this." I used to love to do this 20 years ago, but not anymore. With no apologies. With no guilt.
When you have the courage to admit that, you are making space for something new to take up a place in your heart and your life - a new way of celebrating life that will make your soul sing and dance.
